February is the time for love! But did you know that Valentine's Day isn't the only reason to celebrate love in February? February is also Library Lovers Month, a time to celebrate libraries, librarians, and book lovers! Libraries provide so much more than a place for us to enjoy great books. Libraries are a gathering spot for the entire community to visit for social gatherings, classes, movies, music, digital resources, and more.
For these reasons, we think that libraries and librarians have earned the reputation to be celebrated during February. Join us in February and all year long in celebrating Library Lovers Month and the amazing librarians who run them with these ideas.
StickTogether To Celebrate Literacy
School and public libraries are extremely important for providing kids with access to interesting books and materials. But it is not always easy to turn kids into library lovers. Celebrate Library Lovers Month by getting kids into the library and interacting more with books and spending more time reading. Doing this will help kids to have a more positive attitude toward libraries and reading!
Another fun way to get kids interested in literacy is book clubs! Let them pick books that are popular with their peers and allow them to lead the discussions. Set up your StickTogether for the discussion and let the conversation flow while they celebrate literacy. Shop StickTogether kits here.
Help Someone Obtain Their Library Card
Celebrate this month by sharing your love of the library with someone. Why is it important to get a library card? Like Marley Dias, honorary chair of Library Card Sign-Up Month, would say “A library card is the ticket you need to travel across the globe. It allows you to experience stories that can connect you to diverse and empowering experiences."
A library card opens up so many doors for kids and adults. A library card gives you access to free books, movies, music, magazines, databases, courses, and in some cases, museum passes. Promote the power of a library card to show your love for the library.
Advocate For Your Favorite Librarian During Library Lovers Month
We often underestimate the power of saying thank you. Over the past couple of years, librarians have been evolving to overcome COVID challenges and continue to serve their community. This month take the time to give your favorite librarian a huge thank you!
We love this example that is in The Guardian titled, Thank you to ... the librarian who saved my life before I knew it needed saving. Kerry Hudson gave her childhood librarian an amazing shoutout saying, “For the little girl I was and for all the others like me for whom you provided a hope, a book, a promise of a future and kind words when they were needed, thank you.” Be sure to reach out to your librarian and let them know what positive effect they have had on your life.
